NiraFlow
Sustainable Greywater Filtration System
NiraFlow is a multi-layer greywater filtration system designed for off-grid homes and rural NZ properties without reliable access to fresh water. It replaces the synthetic sponge and plastic filter media used in most greywater systems that shed microplastics into the environment with a system of biodegradable, recyclable, and reusable natural materials, centred on felted strong wool.
Processes
Felting, carding, laser cutting, CNC, Rhino 8, 3D printing, water quality testing
Duration
3 Months
Development ran from raw material testing, where wool was compared against hemp, sand, and clay for filtration performance, through to a working prototype built for a 15-year service life with replaceable natural media. It was a lesson in letting material properties, not a fixed brief, lead the design.
